Who Takes Care of The Nurse?
You are the nurse that slowly pulls away the tape or the one that rips it off all at once. An obligated night shift angel or "I better not be here past 1930 strategist. Either way this maybe the moment you pause to grab some coffee, wine, depending on what time you read this; tea if you're attempting to change for the better. ( I support your efforts)
Disclaimer. I'm sitting in Starbucks drinkning a very overpriced White Chocolate Mocha. I will not judge.
Who Takes Care of The Nurse? ..
Surprise Nursing Provider, YOU take care of the nurse, and the community of nurses around you. As medicine continues to change and our profession expands we are reminded of how critical our role in healthcare truly is, and always has been. But the collective agreement amongst nurses all around this country still leaves so many of us overworked, unheard, looked over, and in DEBT! ( Sallie Mae this post is not for you)
Ask for help. We cannot be experts in everything and no one should expect us to. The days are busy with a thousand things to remember and adapt to. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and if you’re in an environment that is not conducive to constructive learning and support it’s time to re evaluate.
Do Not Advance before you are ready. Healthcare is ready NOW! But is your experience? Get a solid 2 year minimum foundation in your field before deciding to move into advanced levels of practice. This is true both inside the hospital and in the classroom setting. We don’t care if your unit is short a charge nurse. Are YOU ready? Have you been properly trained? It’s your first night... will there be resources readily available for when you have questions (because you will) Require yourself and any management to adequately prepare you. It will ease the transition and allow you to feel more confident as a result.
Stop comparing yourself to your nursing friends. I know by way of social media allllll your undergrad nursing friends have already chosen graduate degrees, traveled the world and drive Mercedes. Personally, I chose to go back to school because my passion lies in health promotion and education —— those encounters are when I am most happy and fulfilled. Would I like to own a Mercedes? hell yes but tuition is real and it’s not my time yet. Find what lights your fire not what gets you likes.
A Nursing Family Matters. You cannot be a loner in our profession. I’ve asked for financial advice regards to pay expectations, job opportunities and shift swaps hahahaha! Lets not forget to mention; "It's not always what you know, but ..." You know the ending. It is likely that your next job endeavor wont be found on an online job board but will be the result of a referral from a friend / current employee of the organization you have your eyes on.
Thank you to these beautiful RN's, NP's, and Entreprenuers! (some of them all three) for agreeing to be apart of this piece. Lucky for me we only needed to have one thing in common; NURSE. Head over to my Instagram to find their profiles and Instastalk them! - Donnie
